The Birthday Hat Box

To my children; to be read on your every birthday.

It is late, 12:50 a.m. on December 20, 2009. I was just lying in bed with your mother talking about how wonderful you are; how much I love you. The picture of you being many years older came into my head and truly one of the deepest desires I have ever had struck me deep. I then said to your mother referring to you, “I hope I can always be your friend.” I can hardly think of anything I want more than to be your friend throughout your whole life. I only have this one chance to show your Father than I can take care of you forever. I hardly know how I will be able to do this successfully if we are not friends. Let me tell you a story.

My father, your grandpa Hirschi, used to manage this bean plant. One thing I always remember finding in his office were these big long boxes of hats. The boxes held the hats in-line one bill under the other, 20-30 or so in a row. He had these hats to give to all the farmers and truckers that would come to the office.

One year on my birthday I found myself surrounded by my family with one of these boxes wrapped up on my lap. I didn’t know what the box was or what was in it, I just knew it was from my dad, and that excited me. Finally after built up excitement I open the box and to my astonishment I find it full of candy bars. I can distinctly remember thinking, “what am I going to do with this?” At that time, I didn’t care for candy much. Frequently I would have candy under my bed for months and months because I didn’t ever eat it. I couldn’t figure out why on earth my dad would give me a big box of candy.

Sometime after my mission, when I decided my father wasn’t half bad I figured out the birthday hat box full of candy. It was simple, my dad loved me, and he wanted to be my friend. He wanted to be a cool dad, he wanted to do something that typical dad’s wouldn’t do. In his mind he was thinking, maybe if I give him this box of candy he might talk to me more, we might hang out more, and we could be better friends. While I was young boy your grandpa had a hard time talking with me, expressing himself to me, telling me he wanted to be my friend and that he loved me. Despite this, when I understood the birthday hat box, I began to understand my dad a lot better. I began to understand that he does want to talk to me, he does want to be with me, he does love me, and he does want to be friends. I just wish now it didn’t take me so long to see.

I want you to know that however much I too struggle with talking to you, understanding you, expressing my love to you, and showing you how much I want to be your friend…I do. I want with all my heart to be your very best friend. I want to know you, understand you, be there for you, and be your friend. I want you to trust me, talk with me, know me, love me, and be my friend. I make so many mistakes, I know I do, but please remember my truest desire. I hope that through this letter, you can believe in your dad and know that he is there for you always in all things. I shall never stop loving you and my desire for your friendship shall never cease.

To Santa's Elfs, Thank You

Last night as I was doing what seemed like a never ending pile of dishes, the door bell rang.

Before this particular time, 5 or 6 people had already knocked on the door or rang the bell because they had apartment problems. Being that Jason wasn't home yet, each time I had to tell them sorry, and went back to doing to dishes.

So as the door bell this time, I was quit annoyed. As I dried off my hands and opened the door, all I found was a nicely wrapped present addressed: Merry Christmas for Santa's Elf's.

I waited for Jason to come home, and we opened the surprise present together. It was a gingerbread kit, we are very excited to build it as a family. So considering we don't know who it was, I decided to put this out there is cyber-space. Thank you Santa's Elf's, for making that pile of dishes not seem so endless and for getting us excited to spread the joy of anonymous giving! I am suddenly excited to spread the cheer and give service to others.

For those of you that may receive a knock at the door and find nothing but a wrapped present or plate of goodies, IT WASN'T ME.......

Count your Many Blessings

Today was Abby's blessing day. It was a wonderful day. We loved having our families here to support us. Jason gave Abby a beautiful blessing. We are so thankful to have her in our home. She is our princess.

I have been thinking a lot lately of all of my many blessings. Here a some to name a few:
- A wonderful worthy husband
- My two beautiful children
- The opportunity that I have to stay home with my kids
- The opportunity that Jason has to get a good education
- Our good job
- Friends and Family
- The restored Gospel of Jesus Christ
It was a beautiful Day. We sure are grateful for our beautiful family.

First Day of Nursery

Brogan is finally 18 months old! That means I don't have to wrestle with two kids during three hours of church.....just during one! Brogan loves going to nursery. As soon as I drop him off, he doesn't even look back. He loves the toys and other kids.

Sisters and Cousins

There are four new grandchildren in the Quigley family, and three of them are baby girls who are all less than three weeks apart.

Last week the kids and I went to go visit my sister and her new baby Amber. Amber and Abby are only six days apart.

My sister Alesha with her baby Amber, and me with Abby

I am so excited that Abby has two girl cousins so close in age. We have to wait till New Years to meet Nathan's daughter.

I see many fun play dates ahead for these two girls!
